Women in Mathematical Sciences - Talk by Letizia Issini (University of Geneva)
In this event organised by Women in Mathematical Sciences at Lund, we have a guest speaker from the University of Geneva. Letizia Issini is a PhD student, and her research interests lie in geometric group theory. The talk will take place in MH:Hörmander in the MH building. Letizia will tell us something about her research and about her career path, in a talk accessible for undergraduate students. Everybody is welcome and no registration is necessary. There will also be a get-together with the speaker after the talk. If you are interested in joining us for this get-together, please contact us at: women@math.lu.se
Title: Lamplighters and divergence in groups
Abstract: In this talk, we will present some approaches used in geometric group theory, such as the study of quasi-isometry invariants of finitely generated groups. You may have heard about some of these, like growth and amenability. We will be talking about another one, divergence. The lamplighter group is an interesting example of a finitely generated group, and starting from it we will describe the algebraic structure of a wreath product. Finally, we will sketch the proof that wreath products of groups have linear divergence.
