Women in Mathematical Sciences - Talk by Karthika Rajeev
In this event organised by Women in Mathematical Sciences at Lund, we have a guest speaker from Bielefeld University.
Karthika Rajeev is a postdoc at Bielefeld University, and her research interests lie in group theory with links to number theory and computer science. The talk will take place in MH:228 in the MH building. Karthika will tell us something about her research and about her career path (past and future), in a talk accessible for undergraduate students. Everybody is welcome and no registration is necessary.
There will also be a get-together with the speaker after the talk. If you are interested in joining us for this get-together, please contact us at: women@math.lu.se
Talk title: Counting subspaces and beyond: An introduction to subobject growth
Abstract: How can we count smaller spaces within a larger one, such as the subspaces of a vector space? In this talk we will explore how to count subspaces of finite vector spaces, starting with simple examples. We will then look at how this idea can be used to count other types of "subobjects" in different mathematical structures. Along the way, we will discuss patterns in how these counts grow and why this is important for understanding complex systems. No advanced knowledge is required - just an interest in counting!
