Conceptually rich problems in mathematics - is it possible?

Tid: 2025-03-10 10:15 till 11:30 Seminarium

We welcome everyone to a discussion seminar, at the Centre for mathematical sciences, on the role of conceptually rich problems in undegraduate mathematics education. Jerry Feldman, a physicist from George Washington University, Washington DC, will start the discussion with an opening statement.

Abstract: Last June, Jerry Feldman conducted a workshop at MC on an active learning method he calls SCALE-UP (Student-Centered Active Learning Environment for Undergraduate Programs). Originally developed for physics education, this approach is centered around students engaging with conceptually rich problems. During the workshop, Jerry was surprised by the response from mathematicians who found the method promising but questioned whether there are similar types of problems in mathematics. Since Jerry is currently visiting the Department of Physics in Lund, we are taking the opportunity to host a discussion seminar to follow up on these reflections. The seminar will begin with an opening statement from Jerry, followed by a discussion. Coffee and fika will be served.

About the speaker: Jerry Feldman is a professor in nuclear physics at George Washington University, Washington DC. For many years, he has been developing and implementing a successful method called  SCALE-UP (Student-Centered Active Learning Environment for Undergraduate Programs) at his home university. For a quick introduction on SCALE-UP, you can watch this 5 minute video: https://film.oslomet.no/scale-up-collaborative-group.
