Title: Totally ordered sets of ideals in commutative noetherian rings

Abstract: An old theorem by Hyman Bass says that in a (commutative) noetherian ring that each totally ordered set of ideals is countable. I will give a slightly simpler proof of it. I will also give some extension of it and discuss applications.
