Image Based Locator for Network Cameras

Image based localization is a sub-field of computer vision that is gaining a lot of traction in recent years due to its useful applications in areas like robotics, augmented reality, navigation and modern surveillance systems. The main objective of this thesis is to explore if the location of a stationary network camera can be estimated with high precision using only a single taken image, given the address of the camera along with certain parameters such as focal length and camera tilt angle. These specifics result in a novel problem with unique approaches, in a time when most state-of-the-art image based localization methods using monocular images give relatively coarse estimates of the camera’s location. The investigation considers two approaches: a structure-from-motion technique using street view photography and
a perspective transform image matching method employing satellite imagery.
