Academic career, research topics, meeting Ph.D. students, postdocs and other students, learning about the Swedish pre-Christmas traditions - All in one afternoon on Friday the 6th of December. Behnaz Pirzamanbein, postdoc at DTU in Image Analysis & Computer Graphics, will talk about “Mathematical Statistics in the Big Data era” and then Monika Eisenmann, postdoc at LTH in Numerical Analysis will talk about “How randomization can improve numerical schemes”.

Popular summary of the talks:

Behnaz Pirzamanbein: Mathematical Statistics in the Big Data era.

In my presentation, I will talk about how solving the real-life challenges encouraged me to choose mathematical Statistics as my research path. I will present some exciting examples of my research on environmental and climate data, and medical and material 3D images.

Monika Eisenmann: How randomization can improve numerical schemes

In this talk, we consider a simple technique that can be applied to find a numerical solution to a differential equation with time-irregular coefficients. To this end, we will first see how the Monte Carlo algorithm can be used to improve approximation methods for integrals of irregular functions. This idea can be combined with simple time-stepping schemes in order to approximate the solution of a differential equation more efficiently.

The talks are student-adapted. We serve a Swedish Christmas drink during the talks, and Christmas fika after the talks. This social event is brought to you by Women in Mathematical Sciences at Matematikcentrum, and everyone is welcome!

3.45 – 4.00 p.m. Room MH:H: Christmas drinks

4.00 – 5.00 p.m. Room MH:H: Research talks

5.00 – 6.00 p.m. Staff kitchen on the 2th floor (mathematical statistics), Snacks, fika, mingle. Please note the change of venue.
