Student-centred university mathematics education with the Extreme Apprenticeship method

Tid: 2022-09-28 13:15 till 14:30 Seminarium

Johanna Rämö, University of Eastern Finland, speaks at the pedagogical seminar at the centre for mathematical sciences.

Abstract: I will talk about the student-centred teaching method called Extreme Apprenticeship. I will describe the teaching practices and obtained results, and also how we have built a research project around the teaching method.

In the Extreme Apprenticeship method, students have an active role in their own learning. The teaching method is a form of flipped learning and inquiry-based mathematics education. Carefully designed task sequences aim to support deep understanding, and the open, accessible learning space encourages students to discuss and collaborate. Pedagogical development of tutors revolves around inquiry into the students’ learning, and sets of explicitly shared norms support equal participation. Our studies suggest that the Extreme Apprenticeship method supports students’ learning better than traditional lecture based-teaching. The effect is more prominent for female than male students.
