Abstract: 

Statistical capacity-building often focuses on the capacity to calculate things; yet, logical and conceptual misunderstandings drive many, if not most, failings in statistical work.  Strong foundations in probabilistic thinking are necessary, for example, in selection of methods for data analysis, interpretation of testing results, and incorporation of statistical information in decision-making. While the statistical community has successful developed many tools for teaching statistical calculations and tests, examples and resources for teaching statistical thinking are less common.  In this presentation, I share opportunities for building statistical capacity beyond calculations. I begin with the human brain and common statistical illusions and then provide an overview of a successful course in statistical thinking, including simulation-based exercises (both analogue and digital), understanding how a single statistical analysis fits into the larger supply-chain of knowledge; and opportunities for successfully communicating uncertainty. Finally, I look forward to sharing four short modules (or exercises) from the course and brainstorming ideas for how they can be adapted to any context.
