Gravitational collapse for the Einstein-Vlasov system

Abstract: I will present results on gravitational collapse for the Einstein-Vlasov system in the spherically symmetric case and in the axisymmetric case. In the former case I will give criteria on the initial data which guarantee the formation of black holes in the evolution. The relation between gravitational collapse for the Einstein-Vlasov system and the Einstein-dust system will also be discussed in the light of the cosmic censorship conjecture. (This conjecture was proposed by Roger Penrose in 1969.) In the axisymmetric case I will present a couple of numerical results which demonstrate the power of the cosmic censorship hypothesis.
